A server is a special, often powerful, computer configured to provide reliable services when requested by other computers such as workstations and PC's. To increase the reliability, servers normally have more than one power supply, just in case one fails, and more advanced disk systems to store your data. A properly configured server should be able to cope with the failure of one hard disk, and allow replacement of that hard disk (including the rebuilding of the data on that disk) without shutting down the server.
