Secure Socket Layer ( or SSL) offers a more secure way of communication between a web browser and a web server based on encryption. The use of SSL ( shown by a lock icon in your browser) prevents others from intercepting and listening in on this communication. It does, however, not prevent hackers from finding personal information, such as bank account numbers and credit card numbers stored on your computer, or on web servers and other computers used by the companies that you buy from or trade with.
