Find the aswer to what is a Tornado in our FAQs on weather.
A Tornado is a violently rotating column of air hanging underneath a cumuliform cloud that touches the ground. Although Tornados are a lot smaller than a huricane or typhoon, they are powerful enough to create enormous damage in the local area where they touch the ground. Tornados kill on average about 50 to 60 people each year in the USA. Outside the US a tornado is more commonly referred to as a twister.
