How To Guides

How to use alternative search engines.

If you have problems finding the right resources on the Internet, there are plenty of alternative search engines to help you find good resources and quality information for your home work or for your research project. Learning which of these many search engines is likely to give you the best search result in each particular situation, is going to improve your search experience tremendously.

Of course, you have to be aware of the source of the data that these search engines are using. Many popular search engines use the same data source and will therefore give similar results. Hence, no need for me to list all the general search engines. Just the major ones.

If you are looking for localised information or resources, you may want to use one of your local search engines. These are one form of specialised search engines that can give much better search results than a general search engine. But specialised search engines in your particular area of interest may be difficult to find.

Using a meta search engine will give you search results from several search engines at the same time, but I find that you are not necessarily getting better search results. Most of these meta search engines include too many commercial search results for my liking. I prefer to use more specific search engines instead.
