How to improve systems security.
The first and most important step in improving systems security is to ensure that you have installed all the recent security updates. Fortunately, the latest versions of the Windows and Mac operating systems have an automatic update feature. So make sure that your MacIntosh or Windows Update is running regularly. If you are running Unix, I assume you will have enough skills to keep it updated.
I assume, of course, also that you have read our introduction and already installed at least an anti-virus program and a personal firewall. If you have not done that yet, do that now. If you cannot afford to buy the basic security tools, you can start with these free security downloads
The next step in systems security is hardening your system, but for most small business or personal users that is often not really necessary. Unless your risk analysis identifies a particular problem with Internet attacks on your system, their are lots of other risks that you might want to address first.
